Dreams of Flight

Cat Littleturtle and Brianna Godwin in Dreams of Flight

bulletSTORY

Dreams of Flight is a new play for families exploring the miracle of flight, faith and hope through the story of a very special girl who yearns to become an astronaut. The play tells the story of Chrys, a Native American girl from North Carolina who, after losing her mother (and the use of her legs) in a deadly car accident, goes to live with her mysterious grandfather, Leonardo, in New York City. Chrys is aided in her journey facing the challenges of her new life by her patron saints (the Wright brothers), a rapping “Super Pigeon,” and the spirit of Mother Earth.

The play, part of the Dreams-of-Flight community outreach project celebrating the centennial anniversary of powered flight, incorporates original children's art and poetry. To learn more about the project, click here or go to the web site (www.dreams-of-flight.com).

The play, with 11 characters, is performed by a mix of children and adults and is suitable for children ages 7 and up.

bulletSELECTION

Character Description: The world’s most famous aviators, Orville and Wilbur Wright, come to Chrys’ rescue with this musical lesson in aviation.

(Wright boys perform "Pitch, Yaw, and Roll" parody sung to tune of "Shake, Rattle, and Roll") Lyrics by June Guralnick

“Lift that nose, wow, pitch it off the ground
Lift that nose, wow, pitch it off the ground
Hey, watch out boys, we're crashing down down down!

The secret is… pitch, yaw and roll,
Pitch, yaw and roll (let's fly)
Pitch, yaw and roll
Pitch, yaw and roll (let's fly)
Kitty Hawk, look out, the Wrights have sailed 'to town.

Steer that plane, whee, yaw goes left and right
Steer that plane, whee, yaw goes left and right
Uh, oh boys, we're spinnin' on this flight!

The secret is, pitch, yaw and roll,
Pitch, yaw and roll (let's fly)
Pitch, yaw and roll
Pitch, yaw and roll (let's fly)
If birds can fly, so can Ohio guys…
(Instrumental section with boys periodically shouting "Fly, fly, fly")

Tilt those wings, whoosh, roll 'em side to side
Tilt those wings, whoosh, roll 'em side to side
Oh, no, Lord, it's like a coaster ride! (Lielenthal really lied!)

Lift that nose, wow, pitch it off the ground
Steer that plane, whee, yaw goes left and right
Tilt those wings, whoosh, roll 'em side to side

The secret is pitch, yaw and roll
Pitch, yaw and roll (let's fly)
Pitch, yaw and roll
Pitch, yaw and roll (let's fly)
Whoop de doo, we're flying in the sky!

The secret is pitch, yaw and roll!”
